Job Overview:
The Pattern Maker constructs the master models used to produce prototype and production metal and injection molded parts. The Pattern Maker is responsible for creating high-precision master patterns, core boxes, and tooling used in the stamping and injection mold facilities. Using a combination of traditional craftsmanship and VISI CAD/CAM software, you will oversee projects ranging from rapid prototyping and low-volume manufacturing
Hours: Monday – Saturday. Typically, overtime and weekends up to 55 hours/week.
- 6:00am - 4:30pm Monday - Friday
- 6:00am - 11:00am Saturday
Purpose: RCO grows we are looking to add a long-term and dedicated member to the model shop.
Job Duties:
- Modeling: Interpret complex engineering blueprints. Utilize VISI Modelling to create accurate geometries for automotive components and aerospace structural parts.
- Advanced Tooling & Specialty Builds:
- Composites & Laminating: for composite layups and master models for plastic laminating.
- Vac-Forming: Create aluminum or resin tooling for vacuum forming, including vent hole strategy.
- Additive Lab Parts: Integrate 3D-printed components from the additive lab into traditional tooling or use them as sacrificial patterns for investment casting.
- Show Display Builds: Construct high-finish show display models for trade shows or executive reviews, ensuring aesthetic perfection and structural integrity.
- Mill Room Operations: Must be fully proficient in the safe setup and operation of all mill room equipment, including band saws, table saws, drill presses, and sanders to prepare raw stock and refine final patterns.
- Prototyping & Low-Volume Production: Develop "one-off" prototype models and bridge-tooling for low-volume manufacturing using cost-effective resins and timbers.
- CNC Programming: Generate advanced 3-axis and 5-axis toolpaths within the VISI CAM environment to machine patterns from various substrates.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Education: Completion of a Patternmaking Apprenticeship or a degree in Mechanical Engineering/Manufacturing.
- Mill Room Mastery: Proven expertise in traditional woodworking and toolroom machinery (band saws, table saws, drill presses, etc.).
- Material Expertise: Extensive experience with composites, thermoforming plastics, and laminating resins.
- Precision: Ability to work to tolerances of +/- 0.005” or better.
Experience:
- 5 years in a similar position with in automotive or aerospace manufacturing, with experience in prototype-to-production and display builds.
- Basic Blueprint reading
- Basic GD & T understanding
- Vacuum Forming
- Lay-ups
- Tool Box with the tools needed to perform the job.
