Position: OnStar Vehicle Diagnostic Telematics Systems Engineer – Customer Experience
Location: GM Hybrid onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Hybrid Monday and Friday
Hours:
Monday through Friday with an opportunity for some overtime on weekends
- 1st shift: 8am to 5:00 pm
Travel: none.

Hiring Process: 45 minutes to an hour MS Teams.

Purpose:
The GM OnStar Customer Experience Team is looking for a degreed engineer who has technical skills, and that might have had prior experience with telematics modules in the vehicle. The successful candidate is motivated, works well in a group but can work independently, shows initiative, and has a curiosity of how things work along with a positive attitude.
Manage daily operations of OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics with a focus on enhancing customer experience.
- Develop and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Vehicle Diagnostics using vehicle diagnostics data and data science tools.
- Provide technical and innovative solutions to application/system related problems that spans multiple platforms and technologies – focus on mobile apps and diagnostics alerts.
- Partner with GM engineers and designers to understand system design, failure modes, and customer-facing issues.
- Simplify complex technical findings into clear problem descriptions and actionable solutions.
- Apply big data analytics (Hive, Hadoop, Databricks, Power BI, ETL methods, etc.) to generate insights from high-velocity, real-time vehicle data.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts on vehicle health, diagnostics, and driving behavior analysis.
- Work closely with engineering teams to ensure data collection accuracy, integrity, and issue resolution.
- Support both Agile and Waterfall methodologies in design, requirements gathering, testing, deployment, and continuous improvement.
- Serve as Level 3 support for customer issues, driving root cause resolution through data-driven insights.
- Partner with finance teams to forecast airtime/data costs and support cost-efficiency strategies.
Operational & Analytical Focus
- Manage operations for real-time, high-volume data environments, handling millions of vehicle transactions daily.
- Perform transactional data analysis to detect patterns, diagnose issues, and recommend improvements.
- Contribute to feature design, architecture reviews, and deployment of analytics-driven solutions.
- Research cutting-edge telematics and data technologies to enhance performance and reliability.
- Preferred system experience includes Databricks, SQL, and Python — prior exposure is helpful, but skills can be developed on the job
- One team member manages the fleet and conducts vehicle testing approximately once per month
Day in the Life:
- Coding experience, familiarity with the systems and how they work
- Connective services within the vehicle experience
- Involved in VTM (Vehicle Test Management) operations
- Analyzing vehicle data, including diagnostic information, to identify issues and communicate findings to customers.
- Strong Data Analysis and Analytics experience required
- Responsible for handling customer cases and troubleshooting within internal systems.
The team is about 11 people and growing. Collaborating with team members on diagnostic-related tasks.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- Bachelors degree in computer science or computer engineering.
- Experience:
- Minimum 1-3 years in automotive vehicle diagnostics
- SQL
- Previous telematics/connective experience – wireless aspect.
Soft Skills:
- Process oriented and detail-driven, able to follow established procedures consistently
- High degree of emotional intelligence.
- Effective communication; written and verbal. Good records keeping.
