Position Summary:
RCO Engineering is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Tool Maker to join our team in a low-volume, high-mix automotive, aerospace, and defense manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will be a hands-on craftsman responsible for the construction, assembly, and repair of intricate prototype and production tooling. This role requires exceptional attention to detail and proficiency in interpreting 3D tool data, with the ability to manage complex tool actions such as slides and lifters as well as hand load inserts. As a crucial member of our team, you will ensure our tooling meets the high-quality and tight-tolerance standards required for the automotive, aerospace and defense industries Overtime is a regular part of this position, and the ability to work effectively under tight deadlines is essential.
Responsibilities:
- Tool Building and Benching: Execute precision building, fitting, and benching of complex prototype and production tooling. This includes manual work to ensure parts fit together accurately and conform to specifications.
- Tooling Assembly: Perform assembly of new and repaired tools, using both manual and machine tools to fit and adjust parts.
- Spotting and Action Verification: Expertly spot tools to verify accuracy and ensure proper functioning of all tool actions, including slides, lifters, and other complex movements.
- Polishing: Execute the detailed polishing of tooling surfaces to meet high-quality and finish requirements.
- 3D Data Interpretation: Work directly from 3D dimensional tool data to construct, assemble, and verify tooling. Experience with VISI software is preferred.
- Tool Repair and Maintenance: Diagnose and repair complex tooling issues to minimize production downtime in a dynamic, high-mix production environment.
- Problem-Solving: Collaborate with engineering and production teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to tooling performance and part quality.
- Quality Control: Inspect and test completed tools and assemblies to ensure conformance with engineering specifications and quality standards.
- Safety and Procedures: Adhere to all safety protocols, operational procedures, and company policies, maintaining a clean and organized work area.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of professional Tool Maker experience in a manufacturing environment is required, with 10+ years preferred.
- Technical skills:
- Strong background in precision benching, fitting, and assembly of complex tools.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering blueprints, schematics, and 3D data.
- Demonstrated expertise in spotting tools and verifying all tool actions, including slides and lifters.
- Proven experience with polishing surfaces for a high-quality finish.
- Experience working with 3D dimensional tool data; proficiency with VISI software is a plus.
- Communication skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with customers, suppliers, and internal teams.
